Alarming photos show group heading to Edinburgh's Cramond Island despite lockdown closure

Alarming photos have revealed rule-breakers are still heading to Cramond Island, despite the recent closure following a rescue during lockdown.

In images sent to Edinburgh Live, a group of people can be seen blatantly ignoring signs indicating that the island, which lies just off the foreshore, is closed as they make their way to the popular beauty spot.

An eye-witness said the photo was taken at around midday today and that it appeared they may have been on a day out, with many of those in the group carrying backpacks.

The path to Cramond Island was officially closed after four people sparked a rescue operation when they became stuck there over the Easter weekend.

The coastguard and a RNLI lifeboat were called out to the incident, as well as police who issued the group with fines for breaching  lockdown rules.

This isn't the first time that people have flouted the Government's lockdown measures, which are designed to curb the spread of coronavirus, for a trip to the beach.

Last month, squads of officers were forced to patrol Silverknowes and Cramond targeting drivers arriving in the area and sending away those who were not local.

One man, said to be in his sixties, was even served with a fixed penalty notice after shouting at officers: "What is this, China?"
