Alarming footage shows Union Canal 'emptying' after path collapses following thunderstorm

A shocking clip appears to show the Union Canal "emptying" after a path gave way following torrential rain.

The concerning footage reveals, what used to be the towpath in Falkirk, has collapsed - allowing water to spill out of the canal.

Mike Harvey, who shared the video said: "Union Canal rapidly emptying near Linlithgow. Flowing rapidly west!".

Some on social media expressed fears over where the water would end up as it gushed out.

One said: "No locks between Edinburgh and Falkirk so whole canal surely going to empty?"

"OMG! That'll drain the entire canal", said another.

Meanwhile, a Linlithgow woman commented that the water was already flooding the train lines and fields around her parents house.

However, Scottish Canals have reassured public that they are taking the "necessary steps" to deal with the incident.

A spokesperson for Scottish Canals said: "We’re aware of the situation and the Union Canal is now closed until further notice.

"Our teams are onsite and taking the necessary steps."
