Alarm bells go off with footage showing pattern to watch out for as Fairview thief steals bike

Striking footage showing the moment a bike was stolen in the Marino/Fairview area has emerged on the same day gardai revealed new figures that show the concerning number of bike thefts in the capital.

The man can be seen wearing a bright coloured orange high vis as he removes the bike lock from the bicycle which is secured to a lamp post.

The incident happened at the Marino Mart, St Aidan’s Park Road area, just outside Sparkle and near Brams Cafe.

A user commented underneath the local post, saying: “In longer CCTV we see him ringing someone, pacing and then he walks up to the crossroads (after the fruit & veg shop) and returns within 40 seconds to steal the bike.

“Does anyone near the junction have CCTV footage or dash cam footage? If we see him interacting with a car or van we could get their number plate.

“Maybe they provided the angle grinder? Timeframe would be roughly 5.20pm - 5:35pm. You’ll spot him easy by the orange high vis. Can confirm time with local businesses cctv today.”

According to the local woman, the CCTV footage was captured by a local business and Clontarf Garda Station is now involved.

There have been almost 5,000 bikes stolen across Dublin since the beginning of 2020 with 4,825 nabbed across the capital up to the third week in April.

In 2020 alone there were 3,958 bikes taken with 867 stolen between January 1 this year through to April 23.

Gardai have managed to recover 1,302 of the bikes stolen in Dublin since the beginning of last year - 1,107 from 2020 and 195 this year.

For those who have had their bike stolen, gardai have issued some important tips for identifying them - and for ensuring your bike can be returned to you if it is stolen.

  • Spend 10% to 20% of the value of your bike on two locks.

  • Lock your bike tightly to an immovable object.

  • Keep the lock off the ground.

  • When storing your bike at home in a shed or garage ensure it is locked to an immovable object or another heavy item i.e a lawnmower

  • Take a photo of your bike, note the serial number and email it back to yourself or store it on the cloud so you have a record of it forever.

  • Lock your bike indoors or in well-lit areas if possible.
