Alan Turing features on new £50 note entering circulation today

A new £50 note has entered circulation today (June 23) and features Alan Turning who is known as the WW2 code breaker.

Today's release date marks what would have been the computer pioneer and wartime codebreaker's birthday, who died on June 7, 1954.

The new £50 note will be printed on polymer, a type of plastic material meaning the Bank's collection of printed banknotes will be made of plastic for the first time.

Below his will be one of his quotes which reads: "This is only a foretaste of what is to come, and only the shadow of what is going to be."

According to the BBC, Ruth Euling, managing director of De La Rue Currency, said it was "more challenging to produce the polymer notes, but it made financial sense.

"Making cash more efficient is also an important part of keeping cash alive."

However, don't expect to get your hands on one any time soon though as ATMs rarely hand out £50 notes.

The previous £50 paper notes were issued back in 2011 but are now no longer being printed.

As a result, they will be withdrawn by the end of September 2022 meaning they will no longer be accepted in shops from October of that same year.

So if you come across any, the post office will exchange them.
