Alan Titchmarsh reduces couple to tears with stunning garden makeover in Barry

Alan Titchmarsh gave an Army veteran's family garden a makeover to make the space more accessible and "work for him and his entire family".

The TV favourite went to Barry to transform the garden on his ITV show Love Your Garden on Tuesday night.

The programme sees him travel around the country to give beautiful gardens to Britain's most deserving people.

Love Your Garden is on every day at 8pm on ITV (ITV)

Dale, who is a dad to two boys, was only 16 when he joined the Army and lost his leg in Afghanistan in 2009. Despite rehabilitation he still struggles with mobility issues and PTSD.

Dale's wife Laura dreamed of a garden where they can all be a family together as the old design of the garden had steps and walls which prevented Dale from accessing some parts of garden.

Alan wanted the new garden to include smooth access and ramps rather than steps.

Alan also wanted a bar/dining area for Dale and his friends after Dale's friend said on the show: "You don't get the same laugh as you do with your civilian friends than you do as your veteran friends."

The garden featured a military crest on the wall and a sanctuary for Dale after Alan heard he would go in to his car whenever he needed some space.

The sanctuary is surrounded by decorative screens, a CorTen steel water table, and climbing roses.

Laura and Dale were both emotional when seeing the garden. Laura said: "I have no words."

On video footage showing the family settling into the garden weeks later, Dale said: "This garden is amazing. I love it!"
