Alan Thompson in Rangers 'first title' jibe as former Celtic hero dismisses 55 world record

Former Celtic hero Alan Thompson has dismissed Rangers’ world record for domestic league titles by claiming it’s the Ibrox club’s FIRST.

The Englishman got involved in a social media spat with some Light Blue followers and said “55 is a myth!!”.

Thompson’s argument is in reference to those who believe the Ibrox side started from scratch following their financial collapse in 2012.

A group of Celtic fans caused controversy when they paid for an advert in a newspaper saying Rangers were a new club.

The advert was a lengthy statement which claimed Rangers became a new club following liquidation in 2012.

However, the world football governing body FIFA stepped in to resolve the argument by rejecting those claims.

SPFL chairman Neil Doncaster also said after an independent commission which looked into the club’s use of EBTs: “The decision, very clearly from the commission, was that the club is the same, the club continues, albeit it is owned by a new company, but the club is the same.”

However, in a series of tweets Thompson - who spent seven years at Parkhead and won nine major honours and also had a stint as a coach under Neil Lennon - said: “55 titles my a***!!”, "First title for them, 55 is a myth", “I deal with the truth and facts!!!. It’s a first title well deserved” and “One club and proud”.

Rangers romped to the Scottish Premiership by a staggering 25 points over Celtic for their first major trophy in 10 years.

It was the much-coveted 55th league title in their history which is more than any other club in the world, although Linfield are on the brink of equalling that record this season.
