Alan Thompson cops Celtic Twitter flak over Neil Lennon defence

Former Celtic star Alan Thompson has come under fire from Hoops fans on social media after issuing a defence of Neil Lennon.

The Englishman was assistant to Lennon during his first spell as manager at the club but didn't return with his old team-mate last year.

But he was quick to defend him on Twitter after criticism was aimed at him following the 2-0 win for Rangers at Celtic Park on Saturday afternoon.

Thompson insisted Lennon wasn't to blame, and even went as far as naming Peter Lawwell as the man behind why Celtic struggled during the derby.

He posted: "“I blame Peter Lawwell.

“DO NOT BLAME LENNY! He’s doing his job to the best of his ability."

But many Celtic fans were unimpressed with Thompson's view of the game with some insisting it was an old pals act.

One supporter insisted it was the ‘worst performance’ of his life at the age of 50 and called for Lennon to be sacked immediately.

Another said: “I don’t think Lennon should escape criticism. I’m not a fan of Lawwell at all but we can’t sit here saying Lennon hasn’t been backed.”

Other fans believed Thompson would have a different view on the game if Ronny Deila was in charge, and the criticism flew in for Thompson before he then tweeted: “Seriously guys, relax and stop being so critical.”
