Ralf Rangnick backed to be a success at Manchester United

Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith has backed Ralf Rangnick to be a success at Manchester United if he’s appointed as interim manager.

The former RB Leipzig boss is reportedly poised to join United on a deal until the end of the season, but won’t be in charge for their trip to Chelsea on Sunday due to work permit issues.

The 63-year-old German would be expected to revive the club’s disappointing campaign, with the Reds currently eighth in the Premier League table.

United struggled and seriously under-performed under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, however former Arsenal striker smith is confident Rangnick has the experience and guile to improve their fortunes.

“You ask the German coaches; Thomas Tuchel, Jurgen Klopp and Nagelsmann at Bayern Munich, they all look up to him. He told Sky Sports.

“He wrote the rule book in many ways for others to follow, I think it’s a really good appointment.

“During his first few months in charge I think you’ll see improvements particularly in individuals, and I think he likes working with young players.

“The likes of McTominay, Sancho, Rashford and Greenwood, he’ll really enjoy working with these players. I think within the next few weeks and months you’ll see those boys kick-on.”

Rangnick currently works as Head of Sports Development at Lokomotiv Moscow and previously held the position of director of football at both Leipzig and RB Salzburg.

Smith claims his experience of helping clubs to progress and recruit wisely will only be of benefit to United as he looks to rebuild them in the short-term.

He added: “I think you’ll see him stamp his style of football on that United team pretty quickly.

“He’s said many times before one of the main jobs of a coach is to know how he wants his team to play and to sell that vision to his players.

“If those methods start to work, players feel that they’re improving individually, they’ll go with that manager and that’s how he’s achieved success down the years.”
