Alan Shearer verdict on Newcastle United response after 'awful' first half

Alan Shearer was much more content with Newcastle United's second-half performance at Brighton & Hove Albion after an 'awful' opening 45 minutes.

Leandro Trossard gave the Seagulls the lead from the penalty spot, before Isaac Hayden's low finish earned Graeme Jones' side a 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium.

The point moves Newcastle back off the bottom of the Premier League following Norwich City's 2-1 win at Brentford had taken them into 19th before the late kick-off.

It didn't look too promising at half-time, with the Magpies a goal behind and struggling to get to the grips of Brighton's high press and possession-based style.

However, Jones' team came out sharper in the second period and caused the hosts some problems, with Hayden scoring from a free-kick to earn a share of the spoils.

After the game, Shearer delivered his verdict on Twitter as the Magpies claimed their fifth point of the campaign.

The former Newcastle talisman said: "At least they got higher up the pitch in the 2nd half and gave it a go as the 1st half was awful."

Jones was taking charge of his third match in charge on an interim basis after Steve Bruce's departure last month.

But this is expected to be his last, with former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe set to be appointed during the international break.

Looking back on the game, Jones told BT Sport: "I wanted a win.

"Another VAR decision against us, it happens, I'm not disputing that but I'm talking about the reaction of the players.

"We have had some difficult moments this season but the group is together and you saw that with the response in the second half."

Newcastle's attention now turns to a crucial clash against Brentford at St James' Park on Saturday, November 20 and this could be Howe's first game in the dugout.
