Alan Shearer tells Mike Ashley his dream January signing and outlines Newcastle's ambitions

Newcastle United hero Alan Shearer wants some creativity in the midfield to be added in the January window.

The Magpies made five signings in the summer window, bringing Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser, Jamal Lewis, Mark Gillespie and Jeff Hendrick in to Steve Bruce’s squad.

Bruce will now be looking at the mid-season market to further strengthen his side when the January comes around.

With Wilson a big hit since his move from Bournemouth – topping the scoring charts with eight goals – Shearer wants someone to add that creativity and chip in alongside Wilson on the scoring front.

Asked on Amazon Prime Video’s live coverage of Newcastle’s goalless draw with Liverpool on Wednesday night the one January addition the Magpies needed, Shearer said: “I’d like two or three players, not just one in there!

“But if you’re only allowing one - then I’d like someone with a bit of legs in the midfield to get up and get near to Callum Wilson and then have that bit of creativity in the final third.”

Bruce will be looking to keep Newcastle well clear of relegation trouble in the second half of the 2020/21 season.

The 0-0 draw with Liverpool may mean the Magpies head into 2021 without a Premier League win in four games, but they are eight points clear of the bottom three and have rarely looked in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle.

However, Shearer said the club should have far more ambition than “just avoiding the bottom three”.

“Absolutely,” he said. “They’ve got more than that and that’s why it’s been so frustrating at times.

“But the criticism has been justified, when you draw with Fulham, when you go out of the cup in the way that they did then that’s not acceptable, and you have to take it on the chin when people complain.

“Tonight (against Liverpool) was better, it’s something to build on. They got the ball forward quicker, they were a threat, but that’s got to continue.”
