Alan Shearer tells Liverpool they achieved something Man City, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur could not

Alan Shearer insists no Liverpool title rival could have dealt with their injury luck this season and believes they remain Premier League favourites.

The Reds are second in the table despite a flurry of setbacks with Fabinho and Joel Matip at centre-back for the win over Leicester City on Sunday.

Without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Thiago Alcantara, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson - Naby Keita was also substituted with a hamstring complaint - Liverpool received plenty of plaudits for their performance against the Foxes.

And Shearer believes Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur would all struggle with a similar injury crisis.

“Without a doubt (Liverpool are still the team to beat)," the former Newcastle United striker told Optus Sport after the victory.

“They had questions to answer tonight, with people, including ourselves, saying: How will they cope?

“It is going to be so difficult for them … this is one brilliant performance … they will miss van Dijk, Gomez and Trent, but the way they coped tonight will give everyone something to think about. That is why they are the favourites. Seriously impressive. They had a point to prove.

“I don’t think if you look at City, Chelsea, Leicester, Tottenham – no other club could have coped with seven players out like Liverpool have this evening.

“The players that came in slipped into the formation superbly well. A magnificent performance from start to finish – whether it was the two centre-halves, Milner, Robertson, Mane, Firmino.

“But the man of the match was Jota; everything he did turned into something very, very special.”
