Alan Shearer tells Erik ten Hag to give up on Man Utd star: "He's not good enough"

Alan Shearer has slammed Anthony Martial and insisted the attacker does not have a future at Manchester United.

Martial had been benched for United's trip to West Ham, with loanee Wout Weghorst leading the line for the Red Devils instead. The Frenchman was introduced just before the hour mark, with Erik ten Hag 's men a goal down after David de Gea's first-half howler.

He had two huge chances during his 33 minutes on the pitch, first firing straight at Lukas Fabianski after working his way into the box. His second miss was even worse, as his header from three yards out at the near post drifted out to the touchline rather than troubling the Hammers' goal.

Those misses have convinced Shearer that the time is right for United to move on from Martial. He has spent eight years at Old Trafford, but Shearer believes that he does not have the quality that Ten Hag needs.

"Whatever your opinion is, I think he's had enough time Martial. You don’t need to make any big decision on him because I think the decision has already been made or it should already have been made," he told Premier League Productions.

"He’s been there long enough, he’s had enough chances. He’s not good enough to take Manchester United to where they want to go. If he was good enough he would be starting on a regular basis and he would be scoring goals.

HAVE YOUR SAY! Should Manchester United sell Anthony Martial this summer? Comment below.

"He’s had his time and it hasn’t worked for him, that’s my opinion. We could have been sat here for another few hours and we never felt that they were going to find the back of the net.

"Now, that's not just a problem that's happened today, that happened in the last game and in fact months. It's an issue they're going to have to work out.

"Having said all that, when you look at the bigger picture, they've got a trophy in the bag, they're in a cup final and if they finish in the top four, that will have been a very successful season."

Martial has scored just four goals in the top-flight this season and is set to enter the final year of his contract. His misses at the London Stadium did little to help United avoid defeat, with boss Erik ten Hag furious at the final whistle.

"Of course, we are really disappointed, as you see. So the game, I think we started well. I think in the first half we played well and we created good opportunities," the United boss said.

"We hit twice the post, we had many more opportunities and then one mistake – it was a turnaround in the game. And then you're following effects. And the second half we couldn't bounce back.”
