Alan Shearer takes dig at Mike Ashley as Newcastle United score late winner in FA Cup replay

Alan Shearer took a little dig at Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley during his analysis of Newcastle United's 3-2 victory over Oxford United.

The Magpies went into half-time 2-0 up but Oxford staged a well-deserved comeback, pulling the scores level thanks to Nathan Holland.

United were then on the back foot for large parts of extra time, but a late super strike by Allan Saint-Maximin secured the passage to the next round.

Shearer after the game analysed Saint-Maximin's goal, the impact on the dressing room this win could have and United's poor record in the FA Cup but also made reference to Ashley's perceived lack of willingness to spend cash.

Read the transcript below.

Are you sure about that?

BBC host Gabby Logan asked Shearer if 'corks would be popping' in the dressing room, and if Ashley would have 'sent something down' to celebrate.

With a chuckle, Shearer responded: "Are you sure of that? It costs money to buy champagne."

What the win will mean for the fans?

The fans have got a great affection with this competition but over the last 13 years Newcastle have been hopeless in it.

Mangers have played weakened teams because of the necessity to stay in the Premier League, and they've felt they've needed to be back backed because they haven't got the squad to go the full length in this competition.

But in defence of Steve, he's always said he'll play his strongest team - doesn't necessarily mean they're going to get through.

They've made hard work of Rochdale and Oxford but they've got a decent draw in the next round - it's not a bad three games in the FA Cup.

For the fans, there's no football next weekend but at least they can go home happy - still in the FA Cup, something to look forward to and something to keep their season alive.

What will it mean for the dressing room?

You can just imagine the reaction from the fans and media having been 2-0 up at a League One club and then going home, out of the FA Cup.

But that's not the case, they're in it - full of confidence.

They can go away, and hopefully come back fully refreshed.

Hopefully they're not going to be involved in a relegation battle.

You just never know with Newcastle [success in the cup]

Steve has done it before in the FA Cup with Hull.

He's aware of what this competition means to the fans, he's aware that he has to put a strong team out, and the confidence it'll give not only the fans but his own players to go far in the competition could be huge.

Newcastle players applaud deafening away end after Oxford victory

On Allan Saint-Maxmin's goal

Phew! They know how to put their fans through it - they never do it the easy way.

But what about this from ASM? That is fantastic the way he moves it, the defender, you know he wants to come on to his right foot but has he got the ability to finish? Yes, and just what NUFC needed.”

After the chances which had been missed, when they decided to pass instead of shoot, I thought it was going to penalties and it always going to take a piece of brilliance - that’s what that was.”
