Alan Shearer slams VAR consistency after Aston Villa's disallowed goal vs Manchester United

Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer has hit out at the consistency of VAR following Aston Villa's disallowed goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday evening.

Following Scott McTominay's first half opener for the Reds inside the opening ten minutes, Villa thought they had got themselves back on level terms just six minutes into the start of the second half through Danny Ings.

The former Southampton striker connected with Ezri Konsa's header back across goal and nodded the ball home from close quarters.

However, a lengthy VAR check, which concluded with referee Michael Oliver going over to the pitchside monitor, saw Ings' effort ruled out, with it deemed that midfielder Jacob Ramsey was standing in an offside position when he blocked Edinson Cavani, as John McGinn swung his free-kick into the box.

The delay between the goal being scored and it being chalked off was lengthy and one of the longest English football has experienced for quite some time.

The decision sparked a passionate rant from former Newcastle United striker Shearer at full-time, who slammed the FA's inconsistency for the use of VAR in the FA Cup, in relation to it being in operation at Premier League stadia and not at those outside of the top-flight.

"We should not be using VAR in this game if we can't use VAR in every FA Cup game, wherever that may be," Shearer told BBC Sport. "You shouldn't be using VAR in this game.

"I understand that it's Premier League grounds only, but we were at Hull [vs Everton] on Saturday where they should've had two penalties if VAR was there. They got dumped out of the cup because of that."

On the incident itself, the former England striker continued: " Well, it was obviously for the foul, otherwise they wouldn't have sent Michael Oliver to the monitor, because if it was offside they would've ruled it offside clearly.

"I’m not 100 per cent certain that Cavani was getting back for the goal. He's clever and I think he's been done, and he doesn't attempt at all to get around him.

"Some would say he doesn't have to, but is it a clear and obvious error? I don't think it is because I'm not certain Cavani is going to get to the ball."
