Alan Shearer sends clear instruction to Man Utd after latest David de Gea error

Alan Shearer says that "it's time" for Manchester United to dispense with David de Gea after more of the Spaniard's errors compounded the 3-1 FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea at Wembley.

De Gea let Olivier Giroud's close-range effort squirm through him in the closing stages of the first half in the behind-closed-doors clash, before an even starker error allowed Mason Mount to double the lead in the early moments of the second period.

Blues youngster Mount took aim from distance and looked to barely be able to believe it when he saw that De Gea had spilled the shot into the net.

The goalkeeper could do little about Harry Maguire's own goal that gave Chelsea a third, with Bruno Fernandes' late penalty proving little more than a consolation for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

The prickly United boss called for people to "move on" from De Gea's mistakes in his post-match interview, but BBC Sport pundit Shearer thinks that there is no way back for the Spaniard as the club's No.1 stopper, with Solskjaer instructed to recall Dean Henderson from Sheffield United for the new campaign.

“I think it’s time (to drop him). It keeps happening," said Shearer after the match.

“I think you bring Henderson back when you think he’s going to be number one.

"He has to bring him back as number one otherwise keep him out on loan for experience, but, has that time come? Yes, I think it has.”

Henderson has impressed as Chris Wilder's Blades have mounted a challenge for Europe this season, but at 23 there are doubts over whether or not the England under-21 stopper will be able to cut it as the Old Trafford No.1.
