Alan Shearer selects two former Newcastle United stars as best players outside the 'top six'

Newcastle United have had some fine Premier League talent over the years.

Alan Shearer remains one of the most iconic names to have worn the black and white shirt but there have been plenty of other big names seen at St James' Park.

Should the proposed £300m takeover be approved, the Magpies could be welcoming more global stars back to the North East.

As a result, two former Newcastle United stars have been picked among the best Premier League players to have been at a club outside of the "traditional big six".

Match of the Day's latest podcast sees Alan Shearer and Ian Wright select the leading players who have not featured for one of the leading sides in the division.

With Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur regarded as the 'big six' that puts Newcastle up against the best of the rest.

David Batty was the man in question, having made 83 Premier League appearances for the club.

Batty won the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers as well as the old first division and was selected among those at the top of their game outside of the biggest clubs.

Shearer said: "He was last into training and first away. He used to come in his kit and was already driving away by the time the forwards finished their extra shooting session.

"In terms of loving the game, I'm not sure. But he was a fierce competitor and came back from a serious injury. He was very good on the ball and was an excellent passer."

"I loved him," Ian Wright admitted.

"Did he love football deep down? I'm not sure. He was always very cool. He hardly spoke and was somebody who, if that ball was there to be won, would win it no matter what."

Gary Speed was the other to be listed, having led an illustrious career at Leeds, Newcastle United, Everton, Bolton and Sheffield United.

The midfielder made over 200 Premier League appearances throughout a six-year spell at St James' Park.

"Nobody could stay with him when he moved out of that midfield to help the front men. I've never seen anyone leap as high as him either," Ian Wright said.

"I can't believe he didn't move to a club in the top six. He was more than good enough to play for them."
