Alan Shearer's superb response to 'imminent' Newcastle takeover claims

Thousands of Newcastle United supporters have flocked to a post from club legend Alan Shearer as the long-awaited Magpies takeover edged closer to completion.

Following months of silence and frustration from all parties involved, efforts to revive the £300m deal agreed between Mike Ashley and the Saudi-backed consortium took a huge leap forward on Wednesday.

Early reports of a resolution to a broadcasting disagreement between Saudi Arabia and Qatar-based beIN Sport seemingly paved the way for a breakthrough in negotiations to push through the United takeover.

The would-be owners are 'poised to take the keys', with numerous national media outlets reporting an announcement could be made on Thursday.

The consortium are understood to be ready with an action plan ahead of the three-month wait until the transfer window reopens, with the future of head coach Steve Bruce likely to come under scrutiny.

It was a day full of updates and revelations which had previously sceptical Newcastle fans celebrating the unexpected developments which could see new owners in place for the Magpies' next home game against Tottenham.

The takeover topic has once again dominated national headlines, although this is not immediately clear from Shearer's tongue-in cheek post on Wednesday night.

He wrote: "Been out all day. Anything happening?"

It was a post that drew thousands of likes within minutes, and a plethora of responses from jubilant supporters.

One replied: "The team next season will be that good you can come out of retirement."

Another commented: "You ready for a corner office in the Shearer suite mate?"
