Alan Shearer's praise for Newcastle United after last-minute equaliser secures point against Liverpool

Alan Shearer was full of praise for Newcastle United as sealed a late draw against Liverpool in a game that ended in controversy.

Callum Wilson thought he had scored with 92 minutes on the clock only for VAR to rule his goal out for a handball but United's frustrations were helped when Joe Willock fired home for his third goal in his last four games with the final kick of the game.

The game ended 1-1 and took Newcastle to nine points above the drop zone with five games left to play.

Mo Salah had put Liverpool ahead early on and the Reds had 22 shots on goal - with nine on target - but couldn't add to their early lead.

Allan Saint-Maximin created all sort of issues for Liverpool - who missed the chance to go into the top four and now face an ironic challenge - given the Super League proposals - to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Shearer believes the Magpies were good value for the point, tweeting: 'deserved at least a point.'

Isaac Hayden also praised Willock for another late goal as he tweeted: 'he's done it again.'

Newcastle face Arsenal next and will be hoping to take another step toward safety.
