Alan Shearer's pointed response to Nobby Solano's Lee Charnley claim

Alan Shearer gave a pointed response as Nobby Solano said he was made to feel like he was an ex-Sunderland player when he applied for a job at Newcastle.

Solano was speaking to Newcastle Fans TV's the Greenwood & Mulliner Show about his career and coaching aspirations and said he had sent his CV into United four years ago as he looked for an opportunity at the club.

But he revealed that he suspected MD Lee Charnley was "not happy" with ex-players who have questioned some of the decisions made by Mike Ashley.

Shearer - who has been very critical of Ashley's ownership after working under the Sports Direct owner - quote tweeted the clip, which was shared by NFTV Extra and showered praise on a fellow Newcastle hero.

"Nobby was a fantastic player and is a great bloke!" he wrote.

Solano was speaking on a NFTV podcast about his coaching aspirations and hope that the club could rediscover it's "identity" by reconnecting with some of its former stars.

"I did my coaching badges six or seven years ago, I've coached a Peruvian team already, I'm working with the national team. It's always a challenge but I say to friends when they ask: Go and take the opportunity - even in League One or League Two, start from the scratch," Solano said

"I've learned enough to coach in the game now. One day I might get the opportunity at Newcastle and it would be more than a pleasure. You know my feelings. Even though I'm not working in a club I have applied for so long to try and work for (Newcastle).

"Lee Charnley I think is not really happy with myself or the ex-players, I don't know. I sent my CV four years ago and it was like I'd been playing for Sunderland!"

When the hosts questioned Newcastle's approach, Solano said: "It's a shame. We understand the owner makes his decisions, he can do whatever he wants but if you look at Chelsea giving an opportunity to Lampard.

"The club needs to get back to having an identity."
