Alan Shearer's passionate defence of Newcastle United fans after accusations over expectations

Alan Shearer has issued a passionate defence of Newcastle United fans over their criticisms of Steve Bruce.

Some pundits have hit out at Magpies supporters over their dissatisfaction with Bruce's style of football, arguing that they should be happy with safety from relegation.

Mark Lawrenson said earlier this month that Newcastle fans would not be happy unless they won the Champions League, whilst Chris Sutton has engaged in a long-term war of words with supporters.

Sutton has argued that Bruce's football is similar to Rafa Benitez's defensive style, so fans are hypocritical to be so critical of their current boss when the Spaniard was revered on Tyneside.

Yet Magpies great Shearer has eloquently summed up exactly what fans want from Bruce's side - and it is not the earth.

Instead, Shearer argued that fans just want some hope, and that a lack of attacking intent is not proving inspirational.

Speaking on Amazon Prime ahead of Newcastle's game against Crystal Palace, Shearer shot down the accusations that supporters have too high expectations on Tyneside.

Instead, he said he feels that supporters' wishes are entirely reasonable.

Shearer said: "I hear it said a lot, a few times certainly in the last few months, that Newcastle fans dream too much.

"Newcastle fans don't dream too much, they dream of a team that cares, that has a lot of passion and commitment.

"They want hope, they don't expect to qualify for the Champions League. They just want a bit of hope.

"That's not too much to ask at all from their football club."
