Alan Shearer's one word Match of the Day verdict on disappointing Newcastle United

Alan Shearer delivered a succinct verdict on Newcastle United as they were caught out with a sucker punch at Turf Moor.

The Magpies went down to a Chris Wood header after confusion around a corner call - and then couldn't muster a response.

It was a case of back down to earth with a bump after recent wins had encouraged talk from within the camp of a push for Europe. And on Match of the Day Shearer admitted it hadn't been good enough in a lacklustre contest: "They had one chance with Gayle and another header for Andy (Carroll) but other than that it was a bit of a poor performance and a poor game."

Of the controversial moments in the game, Shearer admitted the confusion around the corner was bemusing as Newcastle then ceded the first goal.

"The referee points for a goal-kick and then for some reason the assistant 70/80 yards away tell him it’s a corner and he goes with that decision. I don’t think it was a foul though: Chris Wood and Fede Fernandez were both at it.

"(On the goal) How good are Burnley at these situations? The goalkeeper gets blocked, Barnes and Hayden are in front of him, they do a job, then Wood is a yard out and sticks it in the back of the net."

Sean Dyche believed Newcastle should have been down to ten men and Ian Wright admitted Carroll may have had a case to answer when he caught Ben Mee: "(Mee) hasn’t got off the ground, his (Carroll) elbow catches him in the face.

"As Sean Dyche was saying, nowadays you probably couldn’t complain if you went for that."
