Alan Shearer's message to Jacob Murphy after Newcastle winger's costly late miss at Watford

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer is adamant Jacob Murphy should have 'put his foot through' the injury-time chance that would have given the Magpies their first win of the season.

Steve Bruce's side put in a commanding display at Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon but had to settle for a point after spurning a host of opportunities.

Sean Longstaff opened the scoring with a powerful effort from range, but United failed to add to that lead with Ciaran Clark, Joelinton, and Joe Willock all guilty of missing chances.

The visitors were made to pay when Ismaila Sarr levelled the score late on, and both sides fashioned openings to snatch all three points in the dying stages of the contest.

The best of theses chances fell to Murphy, who was released one-on-one with Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster in added time.

However, the substitute seemed to be caught in two minds and his dinked effort was easily collected by the former England international.

It is a result which lifts the Magpies out of the relegation zone, but one that left both the dressing room and supporters frustrated at two lost points.

Reviewing the 1-1 draw on Saturday's edition of Match of the Day, Shearer believes his former side should have scored 'at least five' with the quality of chances created.

The pundit named Murphy's miss as the 'worst of the lot', and believes the 26-year-old should have gone for power after being released in behind by Saint-Maximin.

Shearer said:"This was the worst of the lot. I can't tell you what I said, I probably wouldn't have a job if I did. I'm not quite sure what he's trying to do there.

"Just put your foot through it and into the back of the net. That would have been such an important three points."
