Alan Shearer's message for Man United fans as they sing about him during Newcastle game

Manchester United fans spent large parts of their side's victory over Newcastle United singing about Alan Shearer.

Newcastle's all-time record goalscorer was in the commentary box for Amazon Prime, and midway through the second half with his side trailing 4-1 - he responded to the chants of which were sung to the tune of 'cheer up sleepy jean'.

"I wish those Manchester United fans would stop singing my name, I’m being very complimentary here.

"I’ll take it as a compliment - I think.”

Commentator Clive Tyldesley asked Shearer about the 'rumours' that he turned down Manchester United 'twice' - with the Premier League's all time record goalscorer confirming it was 'just the once'.

Shearer opted to sign for Newcastle United the summer of August 1996 for a then world record fee of £15million - choosing Kevin Keegan over Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United.

Newcastle finished second to Man United that season, and again challenged for the Premier League title under Sir Bobby Robson in 2002-03 and 2003-04.
