Alan Shearer's damning verdict on Newcastle United players after Manchester City thrashing

Newcastle United's 'players were beaten before they went out on to the pitch' to face Manchester City last night.

That was the damning verdict of club legend Alan Shearer who was furious with the performance of his former side at the Etihad Stadium.

The Magpies were humiliated by Pep Guardiola's side as goals from Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez, David Silva and Raheem Sterling, as well as a Federico Fernandez own goal, condemned Steve Bruce's men to a 5-0 defeat.

It was Newcastle's first Premier League defeat since the season restarted and it is a night they will quickly want to forget.

With injuries to the likes of Jamaal Lascelles, Isaac Hayden, Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin and Andy Carroll, a number of the Magpies' fringe men were offered an opportunity to impress from the start.

But they failed to seize their chance in the North West and Shearer was raging at the attitude displayed by his former side.

"I know they had players out injured but too many players didn’t give enough. I just felt they allowed defeat too easily," Shearer told Match of the Day.

"They had the attitude that ‘okay, we’ve got players out, we are playing Manchester CIty and we don’t expect to win’.

"They were beaten before they walked out onto the pitch, which was disappointing."
