Alan Shearer's brutal verdict on Newcastle's defeat at Southampton

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer says his boyhood club were lucky not to lose by six as Southampton played them off the pitch.

The Saints, Shearer's first professional club, dominated the game at St Mary's and secured the three points needed to take them top of the Premier League.

Goals from Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong were enough to claim victory but it could have been a lot more - and Shearer did not hold back in telling it like it is.

Taking to social media, Shearer tweeted: "Well done Southampton - top of the Premier League. They were much the better side tonight, [it] should have been six."

Toon keeper Karl Darlow was once again called upon to keep the scores low - saving from Adams, Romelu, Jan Bednarek and Armstrong, while Jamaal Lascelles cleared a header off the line.

It was United's first defeat to Southampton since February 2016, and Bruce's pitiful record against them away from home continues having only managed one victory in eight attempts.
