Alan Shearer's brutal assessment of Newcastle United's 3-0 defeat to Brighton

'Dreadful' - and in that one word, Alan Shearer summed up Newcastle United's performance against Brighton.

The Magpies lost 3-0 up at St James' Park, and never looked in the game - two-nil down within seven minutes thanks to Neal Maupay.

Brighton could have ended the game with more than three goals - Aaron Connolly getting the third late on - and as Shearer told viewers of MOTD 2, Newcastle 'got worse' as the game went on.

Out passed, and outplayed - United struggled with Brighton's approach to the game and didn't register a single shot on target as the visitors hit the woodwork and forced keeper Karl Darlow into a couple of decent saves.

United fans were left shocked at such a performance, and Shearer didn't hold back on his verdict either.

"They were dreadful," he told MOTD 2 presenter Mark Chapman.

"There's been so much positivity flying around Newcastle, and rightly so because of their performance last weekend against West Ham - it had energy, they started the game well, they were a threat going forward but there was none of that today.

"They started the game dreadfully - they got worse actually, and now there will be a lot of criticism flying around and rightfully so.

"Brighton were much the better team, and in every single position Brighton were better."

United face Morecambe on Wednesday night in the EFL Cup before a trip to Spurs next Sunday - head coach Steve Bruce will be demanding a response from his players.

He, however, may have to do it without Allan Saint-Maximin and Jamal Lewis who both left the pitch with injuries in what turned out to be a forgettable day at St James' Park.
