Alan Shearer's brilliant message for Eddie Howe after Newcastle United appointment

Alan Shearer has welcomed Eddie Howe to Tyneside after the former Bournemouth boss put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half year deal.

The Magpies all time leading goalscorer has backed Howe to bring some 'much needed drive and ambition'.

Newcastle fans have had a three week wait to find out who would act as Steve Bruce's successor and Shearer had warned the new hierarchy that they needed to appoint a new manager sharpish.

The Toon are second bottom of the Premier League and are without a win in their opening 11 Premier League fixtures.

Howe faces a huge task ahead of him as he attempts to transform Newcastle's season.

As things stand, the Magpies are five points adrift from safety and have one of the worst defensive records in the division.

Shearer tweeted: "Welcome. Good luck Eddie. We all hope you can bring us some much needed drive and ambition."

Shearer wasn't the only Newcastle legend to send a message of support.

Rob Lee took to Twitter to send the 43-year-old a 'Good luck' message while also warning him of the task ahead.

Howe will be under no illusion of the difficulty of the task at hand, having been in the stand as Newcastle came from behind against Brighton at the weekend.

There were some positive signs for the Magpies, but all involved know that the club is performing way below what's expected.
