Alan Shearer's amusing Harry Kane transfer quip that would be the ultimate flex for Newcastle

Alan Shearer has quipped Newcastle United should sign Harry Kane to 'sit him on the bench' so that the Spurs star does not break his Premier League record.

Shearer remains the competition's record goal scorer with 260 goals, but Kane is hot on the Newcastle legend's tail after plundering 211 goals in the top-flight himself. Kane is showing no signs of slowing down as he nears his 30th birthday and the England captain has already scored more Premier League goals for an individual club than any other player in history.

However, as loyal as Kane has been to Spurs, the England captain is approaching the final year of his contract and may well decide to leave his boyhood club this summer to win the trophies he so badly desires following a disastrous campaign for the Londoners.

When asked by Match of the Day host Gary Lineker if high-flying Newcastle should sign the number nine, when the Magpies already have two great strikers in Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak, Shearer joked: "Only to sit him on the bench so he doesn't break the record!"

Kane fired Spurs in front against Brentford on Saturday, becoming the first player to score in 25 different Premier League matches in a 38-game season, only for his side to conspire to lose the match 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. With just one fixture to go, managerless Spurs are in danger of missing out on European football full stop.

"If it was me personally and his situation now, I would look at my options," Shearer added. "He has been so loyal to Tottenham, so brilliant to Tottenham. I don't think any Tottenham fan could complain if he said, 'Look, I've done my time. I've got to look elsewhere now.'"
