Alan Shearer responds to Steve Bruce leaving Newcastle United

Alan Shearer has thanked Steve Bruce for keeping Newcastle United up and conceded that the head coach was working in difficult circumstances.

Bruce left United after just over two years in charge by mutual consent, as the new owners look to appoint a manager capable of taking the club out of the relegation zone.

Newcastle are 19th in the Premier League and are still without a win this season and Bruce's 1000th game in management, and the new owners first in charge of the club, turned out to be his last at the Magpies after a 3-1 defeat to Spurs.

Many had expected Bruce not to take control of that match but with the takeover moving at such a quick pace, he was afforded a final outing in the dugout.

However, the fans made their feelings clear once again with 'Bruce out chants'. It was a feeling that had been made many times already this season, and in truth throughout Bruce's time in charge.

Club legend Shearer, who advised Bruce not to take the job, has since shared his view.

He explained on Twitter: "I know how tough it was for any manager at Newcastle for the last 14 years. I also know how badly Steve & his family wanted it to work.

"In difficult circumstances for everybody, he kept Newcastle up for two seasons. It’s a new era now, but thank you, Steve, for your effort and commitment."
