Alan Shearer responds to Manchester United fans singing about him during Newcastle clash

Premier League and Newcastle United icon Alan Shearer sent a message to Manchester United fans during the club's Boxing Day clash at Old Trafford against the Tyneside outfit.

The visiting side took a first-half lead through Matty Longstaff but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side responded in strong fashion, fighting to secure a 4-1 victory.

During the game, many United fans at Old Trafford sung about Shearer turning down a transfer to join the club during the 1990s, and the former England international reacted accordingly.

"I wish those Manchester United fans would stop singing my name, I’m being very complimentary here. I’ll take it as a compliment - I think," he said while on co-commentary duty for Amazon Prime Video's coverage of the Premier League.

Commentator Clive Tyldesley asked Shearer about the 'rumours' that he turned down Manchester United 'twice' - with the Premier League's all time record goalscorer confirming it was 'just the once'.

Shearer signed for Newcastle for £15m in August 1996, a then world-record fee, and the Magpies finished second behind United that season.
