Alan Shearer praises substitutions vs Southampton as Newcastle United go seven unbeaten at home

Alan Shearer admits that Newcastle United's performance against Southampton wasn't pleasing on the eye but it was a very welcome three points.

The club's all-time leading goal-scorer was left impressed with the Magpies' substitutions - Fabian Schar on for Ciaran Clark at half-time, Andy Carroll replacing Joelinton just after the break, and Sean Longstaff late on.

United had looked vulnerable on the ball in defence with Southampton pressing the defence and the introduction of Schar seemed to settle things down.

Having conceded to a Danny Ings strike on 52 minutes, United needed to once again comeback from behind to win at home.

The introduction of Andy Carroll seemed to change the game, and the Saints defence couldn't handle his aerial prescence.

It was Carroll's cross which Jonjo Shelvey met to head home, before Longstaff's low drive was tipped into the direction of Federico Fernandez to slot home.

Shearer praised the decisions on Steve Bruce, wrting: "Not pretty at times but a great three points for the Toon. Very good substitutions that worked very well."

That win takes United unbeaten in the last seven at home, and unbeaten in the last week - collecting seven points from Man City, Sheffield United and Southampton.
