Alan Shearer praises 'Box Office' Roy Keane as he puts old rivalry aside

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer acknowledged that Roy Keane, his former rival, is "box office" as a pundit.

Keane and the Magpies' number 9 engaged in a famous on-field altercation that resulted in a red card for the Manchester United captain at St James' Park in September 2001.

Newcastle's all-time leading goalscorer discussed how the role of a pundit has evolved since he started his career as a broadcaster.

"I started in 2006, and from then to now, the role of being a pundit has changed in every way. Social media has changed the role of a pundit, 100%. All of the companies now, whoever it is, a lot of them just want clicks," Shearer outlined on the BBC podcast.

"They've got so much creativity online, and it's a huge part of their business now. You might deliver the best piece of analysis, and someone sat next to you will hammer someone and criticise someone.

"That will be looked at as being more important, more relevant, than the brilliant piece of analysis where you're telling the public something they can't see."

Keane was inevitably brought up in this conversation as he's known for not holding back when working as a pundit. Keane, the former Republic of Ireland and Manchester United captain, has a reputation for giving a brutally honest reviews.

Shearer expressed his own opinion about his former rival's broadcasting approach and acknowledged that, as a result, he is 'box office.'

"Talking about Roy here because I think Roy does that more than anyone," Shearer added.

"He doesn't really do analysis, but because of his career and who he is and how great he was, he's probably entitled to do that more than someone who didn't have the career of himself."
