Alan Shearer pinpoints Newcastle player who had 'his best match in a black and white shirt'

Alan Shearer has picked two Newcastle United players in his team of the week for the Premier League's latest round of games - in which Newcastle beat Everton 2-0 - and has chosen Steve Bruce to manage that side.

That victory - something Shearer described as 'much improved' - was Newcastle's first win in 12 games, and lifted some of the pressure on Bruce.

Newcastle were the better side for most of the game and could have scored more than the two goals they did - Wilson admitting he wasn't happy only to grab a brace.

It is Wilson, alongside Jamal Lewis - who was Newcastle's unsung hero down on Merseyside - who Shearer has picked in his starting XI.

Describing Lewis' performance as 'his best match in a black and white shirt,' he lined him up in a back four alongside Tyrone Mings, Ruben Diaz and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Wilson was put in the centre of a top-three alongside Mo Salah and Patrick Bamford with Shearer writing: "The man of the match, he led the line superbly. It’s great to see him back among the goals."

Speaking of Bruce, Shearer reaffirmed the importance of finally ending the winless run: "He got a much-needed performance from his players and three important points."

The Magpies face Crystal Palace tomorrow hoping to build on the victory against Everton and take a step closer to survival.
