Alan Shearer picks out Newcastle player who had his 'best game' for the club against Southampton

Alan Shearer has heaped praise on Miguel Almiron after the forward's man of the match performance against Southampton.

Almiron scored two of Newcastle's three goals as they held on to beat the Saints despite playing the last 13 minutes with just nine men after Fabian Schar was stretchered off.

The Magpies had already seen Jeff Hendrick sent off for two yellows, and Southampton bring the score back to 3-2, so it was very much a defensive display in the second half and Almiron was key to that.

The Paraguayan was yet again top of the running charts and was crucial in helping his side pick up three vital points.

His performance did not go unnoticed by Shearer who told the Premier League's official website why he picked Almiron in his TOTW: "His best game for Newcastle. Magnificent. Two goals and ran miles for the team when they were down to nine men."

There was also praise for debutant Joe Willock who scored the opener - Shearer describing his first outing as 'magnificent'.

Isaac Hayden, for the second-week running, also featured in the TOTW with Shearer noting he's doing a 'superb job filling' in at centre-back.

Newcastle face Chelsea on Monday night with Hayden once again likely to start across the back as Steve Bruce deals with a defensive injury crisis.
