Alan Shearer picks Allan Saint-Maximin as his man of the match - and the winger can't believe it

Newcastle United secured their Premier League status with a resounding victory over relegation-threatened Bournemouth.

First-half goals from Dwight Gayle and Sean Longstaff sent the Magpies into the break in good spirits before Miguel Almiron and Valentino Lazaro added two more - Dan Gosling getting a late consolation.

For Toon legend Alan Shearer it wasn't one of the goalscorers who stood out but Allan Saint-Maximin - the winger who provided three assists and ran Bournemouth ragged all game.

Taking to Twitter to praise United's performance, Shearer posted: "Superb, Newcastle United. Brilliant Allan Saint-Maximin, MOTM."

The acknowledgement from the club's all-time goalscorer was not lost on Saint-Maximin who simply tweeted 'Wow' before thanking Shearer for the praise.

Saint-Maximin's reaction will only go to strengthen the belief amongst the fanbase that he understands what this club means to supporters and the fan base.

Supporters who follow Saint-Maximin are often left impressed with the fact that the winger is at home in his Toon shirt, his kids also have kits, and his work with the NUFC Fans Foodbank.

Saint-Maximin himself seemed bowled over by the response from Toon fans after the Bournemouth game, tweeting: 'I'm reading all your messages, that’s crazy.

"I'm feeling grateful to be here - thank you lads."
