Alan Shearer pays emotional tribute to Martin Peters in sombre Match of the Day opening segment

Alan Shearer paid an emotional tribute to Martin Peters at the opening of Match of the Day.

World Cup winner Peters passed away today after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The news was announced in the afternoon and Steve Bruce was among the Premier League managers to pay tribute to a great of the game, who scored in England’s 1966 triumph and enjoyed a storied career at West Ham and Norwich among others.

Shearer paid his own tribute with a sombre tribute to an England great.

He said: “Over 700 appearances in club football, of course was instrumental in England winning that World Cup in 1966.

“Football has lost a giant of the game, an absolute legend and my thoughts go out to his friends and family.”

Bruce had earlier paid his own tribute. “He was a complete gentleman. I had the pleasure to play against him when I was young and he was at the end of his career and gave me a lesson in how to be a footballer,” he said.

“I think I speak for everybody in the country that our thoughts are with his family and of course he will be sadly missed because they don’t make him anymore.

“He was a great, great player and will be sadly missed by everybody.”
