Alan Shearer outlines how Spurs can push on and become title contenders

Alan Shearer believes Tottenham are overachieving this season ahead of their Champions League semi-final against Ajax this evening (Tuesday).

Spurs host the Dutch side in the first leg of their last four tie at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Mauricio Pochettino's men one of two English sides in the semi-finals of the competition, along with Liverpool.

Tottenham are also currently well placed in third to qualify for the Champions League again next season, and Shearer has been full of praise for how Spurs have fared this season.

But he has outlined what Tottenham must do in order to keep competing towards the top end of the table, and close the gap on title rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

"Tottenham have had their own self-imposed transfer embargo since they signed Lucas Moura from Paris Saint Germain in January 2018," he said in a feature for the BBC website , analysing the battle for the top four.

"They are now 22 points behind City, and if they want to push on and get closer to the title next year, then they simply have to sign some players this summer.

"Spurs have got the numbers to cover every position but, as we have seen from their results in their past few league games, they do not necessarily have the quality too.

"I don't really think anyone expected them to make the semi-finals of the Champions League in these circumstances, so they are overachieving already - and if Mauricio Pochettino goes on and wins the Champions League then he would be my manager of the year.

Mauricio Pochettino provides update on whether Harry Kane will return for vital Ajax second leg

"But Pochettino's main target at the start of the season was probably just to finish in the top four and I am pretty confident they will get what they need to do that, and raise their game when they play Ajax in the semi-final too."
