Alan Shearer opens up on the 'nice lunatic' at Newcastle who he played a cruel clock prank on

Alan Shearer will never forget the day Tino Asprilla turned up especially late for training after the Newcastle United legend played a prank on the 'nice lunatic' by telling his team-mate that the clocks had gone back.

Shearer and Asprilla spent a year-and-a-half together at Newcastle and the pair struck up a bond off the field as well as on it.

Whether it was Asprilla sitting on top of the gates of Shearer's home shouting his name in the early hours of the morning or Shearer squirting a fire extinguisher through an exposed peephole as Asprilla went to answer the door of his hotel room, something always seemed to be going on.

It won't come as a surprise to you, then, that Asprilla made the cut when Shearer, Micah Richards and host Gary Lineker looked back on the top 10 cult heroes in Premier League history.

"If there is such a thing, he's a nice lunatic," Shearer said. "He was brilliant. He was brilliant for the dressing room because he was a character. He loved a laugh and a joke and he could do no wrong in the dressing room really because he didn't speak a lot of English.

"There was one time where the clocks went forward or back and I was last out of the dressing room on the Saturday: 'Don't forget, the clocks go back'. But, actually, they went forward so I told him the opposite way around deliberately.

"So we were in training the next day and, of course, Tino rocks in an hour late, two hours late, and he's looking at everyone and he walks onto the training pitch and he says, 'F----- b------Shearer!'

"He was brilliant to have in the dressing room."
