Alan Shearer names the worrying record that is holding Chelsea back under Frank Lampard

Alan Shearer has said that Chelsea's defensive record away from home must improve if they're to challenge for the Premier League title.

Despite claiming a top-four finish last season, there were question marks over the Blues' defending as they conceded 54 goals - the most of any side in the top 10.

In a bid to address the issue, head coach Frank Lampard has brought in the experienced Thiago Silva on a free transfer and also signed his first-choice left-back target in Ben Chilwell.

Of the two defensive reinforcements, it was the former who made his Premier League debut in Saturday's 3-3 draw against West Brom.

However, Thiago Silva made an error as the Blues trailed 3-0 at the break.

And he wasn't alone with Marcos Alonso at fault for the other two goals which means the west London have only kept one clean sheet away from home in the Premier League under Lampard.

That rather worrying record is holding the Blues back, according to Shearer.

"They’ve kept one clean sheet in 21 away games under Frank Lampard and a lot of times Kepa has taken flack for that, rightly so, and he was left out today, but his defenders have got to start accepting responsibility," Shearer said on Match of the Day.

"They are nowhere near good enough at this moment in time and basic errors have cost them.

"The first from Alonso, they were punished, there was still work to be done and it was a fantastic finish.

"Then another, one of the most experience guys around, a simple error - you don’t get that sort of time on the ball in our league, you get punished, as they did again.

"The corner was worked very well from West Brom.

"Look at the space he’s around to run into, Alonso should be with Bartley at the far post and was no longer with him.

"These are simple, basic errors that they have to stop if they want to get to where they want to be."
