Alan Shearer names the Arsenal star who was 'excellent' against Man United - and it wasn't Pepe

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has heaped praise on Arsenal after their 2-0 win against Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners kicked off the new year in style with a first home win since October as they brushed aside Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Red Devils in north London, with record signing Nicolas Pepe and defender Sokratis on target for Arsenal as Mikel Arteta celebrated his first win as head coach.

But it was another player who caught the eye of the BBC pundit, with Shearer praising Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira for his performance, along with Arsenal forwards Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

“[Lucas] Torreira I thought was excellent in the middle of the park," Shearer said, speaking on BBC programme Match of the Day.

"[Alexandre] Lacazette and [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang were tracking back and winning the ball back, doing their bits as well. But it wasn’t just about the work off the ball.

“When they went forward they looked a threat. The second half was exactly the same, winning the ball back and trying to get forward. For the whole game they absolutely battered United and thoroughly deserved to win. It was much, much better.

"The intensity, the energy levels, their application. They wanted it more than Manchester United and they were fantastic for the whole game. Everyone was on the same page. They all understood their jobs."
