Alan Shearer names Manchester United among 2020-21 Premier League title challengers

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has tipped Manchester United to become title contenders next season.

Liverpool walked the Premier League this season, brushing aside last season's champions Manchester City to win their first league title in 30 years.

But Shearer has suggested it won't be as easy for Jurgen Klopp's men next season, suggesting United could run them close for the title.

The Match of the Day pundit threw United's name in the hat when discussing Manchester City and the outgoing David Silva.

"I don't like comparing players' achievements, especially when they are in different positions, but Silva has been absolutely magnificent, and for 10 unbelievable years he has been the heartbeat of this City team," he said in his BBC column.

"Even without him, though, they will still expect to put up more of a challenge to Liverpool in 2020-21.

"The same goes for Manchester United; I can see them getting closer next time. Chelsea too - they might still be a couple of players short of winning the league, but they are heading in the right direction."

United have been excellent since the restart, winning three and drawing one of their four games.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men now sit just two points behind Chelsea in fourth and three off Leicester City in third.

Still, they are no fewer than 34 points behind Liverpool as things stand, a gap that represents a mountain to climb over the summer as they look to close that gap next season.
