Alan Shearer names five Manchester United and Man City players in ideal England starting XI

Alan Shearer has named three Manchester City players and two from Manchester United in his ideal England team for the upcoming European Championships.

England will get their rescheduled Euro 2020 campaign underway on June 13 when they take on Croatia and have further group games against Scotland and Czech Republic.

Gareth Southgate is aiming to end England's long wait for a trophy and has some tough choices to make when naming his 26-man squad.

Plenty of players from both United and City will be hopeful of call-ups for the tournament but getting a spot in the starting XI will be even harder.

With anticipation for the Euros growing, Shearer was asked by the BBC to name the England side he would pick during half-time of the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Leicester City, under the presumption that every player would be fit and available.

The former striker named United duo Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw in defence, alongside City's John Stones and Trent Alexander Arnold.

Further up the pitch, Shearer named Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden as the players he would pick to man the flanks in a dangerous attack with Harry Kane.

Elsewhere, Jordan Pickford got the nod in between the sticks ahead of United's Dean Henderson, while in midfield Shearer picked a trio of Declan Rice, Jordan Henderson and Mason Mount.

Alan Shearer's ideal England starting XI: Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Henderson, Rice; Mount; Sterling, Kane, Foden.
