Former England striker Alan Shearer has said Manchester United are expected to win a trophy this season as the pressure increases on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Solskjaer has built a world-class squad at Old Trafford and added Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo this summer in an attempt to capture the Premier League title for the first time since 2013.
United squandered a major opportunity to lift silverware for the first time under Norwegian last season when they lost the Europa League final to Villarreal on penalties.
Having been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by West Ham this season already has left Solskjaer with little room to manoeuvre and the now-pundit Shearer believes the pressure has been dialled up for the manager to succeed this season.
"I think he's done a good job,” Shearer said on the BBC Match of the Day podcast. “I mean, the pressure has now been cranked up because of what’s happened, the signings that they've made this season in Varane, Sansho and particularly Ronaldo.
“He's now expected to go and win a trophy, win a big trophy. I mean they missed out last year, which was a big blow.”
Shearer added that the circumstances in which Solskjaer got the United job made sense, despite his struggles as Cardiff City manager.
“It was perfect timing, the situation that Man United were in," he continued. "And they've gone to a former player who had a very very good record. As you say, his record at Cardiff was poor. But I think it's worked really well for them.”
