Alan Shearer issues advice to Marcus Rashford on Manchester United role

Former England striker Alan Shearer has issued Marcus Rashford with some advice about his position at Manchester United, urging him to make a decision on where his preferred role is.

The 21-year-old was dropped by England boss Gareth Southgate for the midweek victory against Kosovo, with Jadon Sancho taking his spot and scoring his first goals for the Three Lions.

At club level, Rashford faces similar competition for a main starting berth as the leading striker with Anthony Martial to compete with, which has seen Rashford playing in a wider area.

Questions remain as to where Rashford's future lies and whether he should focus on plying his trade on the flanks but Shearer believes he has the capability to do either - although believes he must make a decision swiftly.

“Does he want to play through the middle? That is the big question. Where does he want to play? Does he see himself as the main centre forward?" He told BBC Radio 5Live.

"Lukaku has gone and the manager still didn’t play him down the middle. When he had the option to play him or Martial he played Martial, when he was injured it was slightly different.

“That doesn’t mean to say he can’t score goals. You look at Ronaldo now, you look at Messi now and look at a lot of these players who are scoring goals for fun coming off the left or right hand side.

“But at the minute, particularly with England, he’s not going to play centre-forward. There’s only one guy and that is Harry Kane. He’s still young enough but I think it’s key to ask him and I’ll be fascinated to see where he seems himself.”
