Alan Shearer hits the nail on the head with two word Newcastle verdict after Cambridge defeat

Alan Shearer has hit the nail on the head with his two word verdict of Newcastle's defeat to Cambridge United.

The Newcastle legend took to social media to congratulate Cambridge United after they progressed through to the fourth round of the FA Cup, tweeting: "Well done Cambridge. Pathetic NUFC."

Eddie Howe's side put in the worst performance of his tenure -and arguably the season- as they slumped to a shambolic defeat against League One opposition.

Then speaking on BBC's coverage of the Hull City vs Everton tie, Shearer added: "I hope the players that were out of the pitch at Newcastle went and apologised and thank the fans for their support because there was 52,000 there today

"Cambridge deserved it, they were superb and congratulations to them.

"But I hope they went and thanked them (the fans) because they deserved more than the rubbish that was served up today."

Joe Ironside's goal in the second-half was enough to ensure Mark Bonner's side would pull off one of the upsets of the round.

Newcastle's new found riches were unable to save their blushes and the final scoreline could have been worse, had Jack Lankester's strike on the 86th minute stood.

The result has only shown the new owners how much work needs to be done to ensure Premier League survival.

The club was quick out the blocks with the arrival of Kieran Trippier, but today's defeat only highlights the need for further additions.

On a day which was an opportunity for many to show that they belong at the club in the long term - too many let themselves down.
