Alan Shearer has backed Newcastle United Supporters Trust's bid to buy a stake in the club.
The NUST has launched the 1892 Pledge - a long-term fan-led attempt to raise enough money to buy a stake in Newcastle when Mike Ashley sells the club to new owners.
It has been described as a positive campaign for fans, with the NUST only set to deal with whoever takes over from Ashley, rather than with the Sports Direct owner himself.
Shearer, who has consistently called for a change of ownership at the Magpies due to Ashley's running of the club, has now backed the trust's plans and said he will join the campaign.
"Well done," he tweeted in response to NUST's launch video. "I'm in."
A former player of Shearer's standing and reputation at the Magpies represents a huge early boost for NUST's plans.
Whilst there is no timescale to the plans, the Trust have said they are in for the long haul and will bid to raise a minimum of £3m in order to get them around the table with potential new owners.
The Trust also believes that a large amount of money will be able to both bring something tangible to the table alongside proving the commitment of fans to new owners.
If the appeal proves to be unsuccessful, money raised will be donated to North East charities.
The Trust hopes that, in return for fans' financial backing, any prospective new owners of the Magpies will allow NUST to work within the club, through either an executive board position or another role.
Current plans to raise at least £3m would equate to around 1% of the club.
The Trust have appointed four trustees - Athletic writer George Caulkin, Ian Mearns MP, Warren Barton and chartered accountant Lee Humble - who will decide how the money is distributed if the bid does not succeed.
