Alan Shearer gives his advice to Joelinton and Newcastle United attackers where they need to improve

Newcastle United icon Alan Shearer has told the forwards in the squad where they need to improve, following inconsistency in the final third this season.

A goalless draw against rock-bottom Norwich City in the Premier League at the weekend was the second match in a row where Steve Bruce's side have failed to find the net, following their FA Cup fourth-round draw with Oxford United.

They won 3-2 in the replay with Joelinton scoring but United will need to see more of that and Shearer has pointed out the specific areas where Joelinton and his fellow forwards can improve.

"That's been a huge problem for Newcastle in terms of lack of creativity, lack of goals from forwards. They're not scoring goals but that also has to come from the midfielders as well," he told BBC Sport.

"In terms of Joelinton, he has to get into the box, otherwise he's never going to score goals. I understand there's a criticism to say that he's not a number nine but he is playing in that position, so he should be getting into the box to give Newcastle that option or at least putting them in there.

"In terms of creativity, they have to work better, it's really poor balls. These are the reasons Newcastle are not scoring, there has to be a time where midfielders have to break the line and get in front of the forwards.

"They're just a few of the reasons why there aren't too many goals in the Newcastle team and that's something they have to improve massively.

"When you get the money from the owner, that recruitment has to be spot on and when you're spending that amount of money, those players have to be ready to come into the team and do their job straight away."
