Alan Shearer fires stark warning to Mikel Arteta amid message for the Arsenal fans

Mikel Arteta has got a "massive job" on his hands to get Arsenal back to where they want to be.

That's the verdict of Alan Shearer, who insists that the former Manchester City assistant will need time and patience from the Arsenal supporters, if he is to succeed in north London.

The Spaniard has signed a three-and-a-half year contract at Arsenal to become the permanent successor to Unai Emery, who was sacked by the club last month after a poor run of results.

The Gunners' form has not improved significantly under interim head coach Freddie Ljungberg, who oversaw his sixth game in charge as Arsenal drew 0-0 with Everton at Goodison Park - the third draw in all competitions under his stewardship.

Following the game against Everton, Arsenal now sit 11th in the Premier League table with 23 points from 18 games, ahead of a trip to face Bournemouth on Boxing Day.

Arteta is set to take his place in the dugout for the first time at the Vitality Stadium, and Shearer has warned him of the task he faces to try and turn things around, as he sent a message to the Spaniard and the club as a whole.

“I know one thing, he’s got a massive job on at Arsenal because of where they were to where they are now," he said, speaking as a pundit on BBC programme Match of the Day.

"To get them back to where they want to be is going to take huge investment, time and patience from their fans because they are miles away from that.”
