Alan Shearer has explained why he believes that new Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho got the nod to start for England against Ukraine at Euro 2020.
Sancho is on his way to Old Trafford after Manchester United agreed a £72.9million deal with Borussia Dortmund this week and finally got his first start of the tournament in the Three Lions' quarter-final clash against Ukraine in Rome on Saturday night.
Shearer, who is part of the BBC's pundit team, spoke about the decision and believes the choice was between Sancho and Manchester City target Jack Grealish for a starting berth and explained why he believes Sancho got the nod.
He said on BBC One: “What a week it’s been for him, obviously signing for Manchester United.
"He’s coming off the back of 16 goals he got last season, plenty of assists as well, Gareth knows what he can do and he likes to switch it around, Gareth, we’ve seen that.
"He perhaps doesn’t trust him (Grealish) going the other way, defensively, and he’s proving he can go and do damage when teams are on their last legs. Because we’ve had long, hard seasons, lots of these players are running on empty at times.
"You can imagine that Gareth is looking along the line on the bench, he’s seeing Grealish, or Foden, whoever else he has on there and he can go and unleash them to cause some damage.”
The 21 year old has only featured for six minutes prior to the Ukraine game and all eyes will be on him to shine and help guide England to the semi-finals.
