Alan Shearer explains why he picked an Arsenal player in his Premier League team of the season

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the Arsenal selection in Alan Shearer's team of the season.

The Premier League XI - handpicked by the Newcastle United legend - includes just one Gunners player, with the majority of the side picked from Manchester City and Liverpool.

Dean Henderson, on loan from Manchester United at Sheffield United makes the side, as do Jamie Vardy and Jonny Evans of Leicester City.

Aubameyang had to prove that he was a cut above to make the side - and Shearer believes his goals, as well has striking instincts make him a shoe-in for the XI in a front three that also includes Sadio Mane and Sergio Aguero.

"With 17 Premier League goals, Aubameyang is just two behind top scorer Leicester’s Jamie Vardy as he targets a second successive Golden Boot," wrote Shearer on his Aubameyang decision for the Premier League website.

“The Gabon striker has pace to burn, brilliant movement and has scored consistently despite often being deployed out on the left.”

Since making the marquee move to London from Borussia Dortmund, Aubameyang has scored 49 goals in 75 Premier League matches for the Gunners.

Testament to his finishing ability is his constant success in outperforming expected goals - which the forward has done so in his three seasons thus far at the Emirates in a successful spell.
